Coastal Yoga Retreats IN Sperlonga, ITALY

We'll be running four yoga and soul wellness retreat weeks in June this year; the third year that we've been lapping up the sun in Sperlonga - a charming hillside village of whitewashed houses on the sunny Mediterranean coast of Italy.

Sperlonga is convenient to reach from Rome or Naples airports, both of which offer plenty of low-cost flight options.

Our coastal yoga retreats cost from £650 to £1,250 and include eight yoga classes, accommodation, towels and beach towels, breakfasts and a welcome italian aperitivobuffet on arrival day and the last evening of the retreat week, but not flights and connections.

Yoga Classes by the Sea

Our coastal yoga retreats in Sperlonga include five morning yoga sessions of 90-minutes and three afternoon classes. Morning sessions take place either on the medieval Truglia tower, beside the sea, or on a terrace inside the hilltop village with sea and mountain views. You will breathe the clean sea air into your lungs and enjoy views of the endless sea and horizon. Some morning classes may be held on the sheltered beach overlooking the Mediterranean sea, close to where we serve breakfast .

The afternoon yoga and meditation classes are held on a terrace in the hilltop village which has views of the sea.

Non-practitioners of yoga, travelling with another guest, can opt-out of yoga classes and will receive a £100 discount.

Amy Williams, from the UK, joins our team to teach our first two weeks in Sperlonga.

Amy is an experienced yoga teacher, massage and holistic therapist. And with a love for mantra and chanting, she will be happy to introduce you to the magical world of sound as a tool for creating a deeper, more connected meditation practise.  Most of all, she believes in fun.

Maija says;
" I think that now more than ever, the power of yoga and its teachings, even on the most simple and subtle of levels can allow us to keep things in balance."

Mara Blackburn, from the UK, will lead our yoga retreats for the last two weeks in June

Among her skills are: Power Yoga/Vinyasa flow; a strength based practice to warm up the body and improve blood flow which is typically practiced in the morning to invigorate and remove fatigue.

Mara says;
“I am passionate about yoga and use my enthusiasm and knowledge to help and inspire others.”

Mara also practices Ayurvedic Marma Massage and is a qualified holistic practioner.

The yoga and the massages have been so deeply rewarding; I could not have asked for a better yoga and healing experience.

Private yoga classes

You can also book one-to-one yoga classes if you'd like to deepen your yoga practice or work on a particular sequence for personal health benefits.

About Sperlonga

The pretty whitewashed village cascades down a hillside to the Mediterranean sea. A maze of narrow streets and alleys, inaccessible to cars, it's a perfect companion to our Casperia base and its location, midway between Rome and Naples, makes it just as easy to reach with low-cost flights and a main-line rail connection. A 'Citta Slow' registered with the CittaSlow movement, Sperlonga has also been awarded the Blue Flag award five times, for its clean sea and beaches.

Within the winding streets you will experience the daily life and history of an authentic southern Italian village, with quaint little boutiques, craft and jewellery shops, little alimentari with fresh local food, wine and vegetables, wine bars and cafés serving aperitivi, and range of good restaurants.

Everything in Sperlonga is within easy reach and the food is the best we have ever had in Italy… a huge thank you.
— Jill & Angus, UK, 2014

There are two beaches to choose from; either side of the village. The sea here is is very clean and blue, fed by fresh spring water from the nearby mountains. There's direct walking access from village down to the beaches.

Sperlonga is steeped in history having once been the summer residence of the Roman emperor Tiberius, 'the reluctant emperor', who ruled from 14 - 37AD. Archaeologists have found a series of sculptures in the cave of his villa, which you can visit by foot on Sperlonga's south beach. You can read more about Sperlonga on Wikipedia.

We will stay in characteristic traditionally-furnished Sperlonga village houses much those like at our Casperia base. Each is used exclusively by Sunflower Retreats' holiday guests. We have chosen delightful locations and most of the houses enjoy a terrace or balcony and great views of the sea or terracotta rooftops and cobbled village streets.

You'll probably want to prepare and cook some meals at home; The village shops, which include amazing alimentari - fruit and vegetable shops - stock a large range of food and drinks . Kitchens are shared, with facilities that are characteristic of a traditional Italian village house.

Lovely accommodation. Perfect views.

Our most economical solution is a twin room with a shared bathroom for £650 per person for rooms facing the quaint cobbled streets. There is also an en-suite option for £750.

Rooms in a house with a sea view are £900 per person.

We also have one single bedroom in a house with a sea view and shared bathroom with one other room for £850.

And there is also one double or twin room with en-suite bathroom in a house with sea views for £950

Single travellers should book sole occupancy of a twin or double room with shared bathroom for a supplement of £300.

All guests on our yoga retreats must use our accommodation.

A really wonderful holiday - the most relaxing we have ever had!

Eating & Drinking

A delicious Italian continental breakfast is included in the cost of your holiday. It will be served on the beach in the famous and stylish Il Delfino. The food is locally-sourced with a wide range of healthy food options such as fruit, fresh croissants, eggs, cheese, jams, juices and yogurt, tea and coffee.

The village has lots of great restaurants and enoteche (wine bars) serving delicious southern Italian dishes as well as fresh local fish.  Sperlonga is said to have some of the best food in Italy and our guests rave about the food here! There are also lots of vegetarian options.

Ayurvedic & Holistic Treatments

Holistic treatments are a major feature of Sunflower Retreats' path to wellness and complement the yoga we practice. We have a wide range of treatments, as in a spa, but we differ in that we use only natural, organic products and take a holistic approach in our sessions.
A brochure describing these relaxing, healing and rejuvenating therapies will be given to you when you arrive and you can book them each day at breakfast-time with the Yoga teacher / Holistic Therapist. She will be available to discuss each treatment and help you to choose the perfect one for your own requirements.

Our treatments include:

  • A range of Ayurvedic massages and Ayurvedic Consultations to suit personal requirements
  • La Stone massage
  • Ayurvedic facials using freshly picked aloe and flower remedies
  • Bamboo massage
  • Sunflower's Ultimate Healing Treatment
  • Tibetan and Indian head massage
  • Smudging sessions
  • Treatments are available every day except for arrival and departure days. Prices range from €30 to €100, depending on duration and treatment.

Thermal Springs

The hot water baths of Le Terme Di Sant'Egidio, renowned for their healing properties since Roman times, are located close to Sperlonga.

The pool has sun-loungers, palm trees and a bar and the water has various depths and temperature zones in different pools. The sulphur spring waters have a temperature of 38°c, and have been used for centuries to draw impurities out of the skin, to stimulate skin cells to secrete natural oils and to reduce blood pressure and rheumatism. Combining sulphur water bathing with yoga practice is extremely healing to the whole body and mind.

A day trip, leaving after morning yoga and breakfast and returning in the afternoon, costs €50 per person, including entrance fee to baths, for a minimum of two people.

The retreat was amazing. Sperlonga has breathtaking views; the food was great everywhere we ate and the spa treatments offered are a must too.
Our yoga instructor was a great teacher and I joined a couple of the afternoon meditation classes too. I must say practicing yoga on the Trulli Tower was unforgettable.
