The picture-perfect Italian village of Casperia, our base since 1998, is situated in the heart of the Sabina mountains just north of Rome. It is totally car-free, with fewer than 350 inhabitants. The fortified medieval village has amazing panoramic views of the Sabina hills and mountain landscape from every angle.

Travel with low-cost flights to either of Rome's airports and you'll reach Casperia in a little over an hour on public transport or, for a fee, we can collect you.

Each of the houses in which Sunflower Retreats' guests stay is within a couple of minutes walk from the others and from our yoga studios, breakfast lounge and treatment rooms. Your walk will take you through the winding cobbled streets of Casperia.

The unspoilt structure and atmosphere of the village gives you a unique feeling of being in a historic place in time-gone-by: A place of natural beauty surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and forest-covered mountains where you can watch the changing scenery from every angle.

It was a great holiday, held in the most beautiful village in Italy. Lovely yoga classes - everyone was friendly. Had a great time.
— M.S., Reykjavík, Iceland - Jul 2017
A magical experience for everyone who attended.

Our Yoga Lessons

Sunflower Retreats Holidays yoga classes are suitable for beginners as well as more practiced yogis and are held in English. Your six night retreat includes five morning and three afternoon classes and a Yoga and Meditation workshop.

Our 90-minute morning classes take place before breakfast Friday, through Tuesday, from 8am (or 8.30 early or later in the season).

There are also one-hour yoga and meditation classes in the afternoons, on Friday, Monday and Tuesday and a two-hour yoga and meditation workshop each Saturday, in which we cover subjects such as Yoga Nidra, Yin Yoga, Kundalini and Chakra meditation and balancing.

We practice in a stunning location on a hilltop surrounded by nature, provided the weather is fine, or in our studio at other times.

Our yoga style is non-competitive with a down-to-earth approach, created by Sunflower Retreats' founders and followed by all our guest yoga instructors.

Our teachers teach a variety of yoga methods such as Iyengar, Kundalini, Satyananda, Sivananda, Vinyasa Flow, Anusara, Astanga, Yin Yoga and Divine Feminine Yoga.

Our Yoga Teaching Team

Each of our teachers is required to have undertaken no less than two years training so that we do not rely on 'fast-track' yoga certification. We also take particular care to engage teachers who are humble, genuine and spiritual in their approach to their teaching, as all true yogis should be.

You can find profiles for each of our teachers on the Yoga Teachers page.

Best yoga classes ever. I learned so much!
— Claire, 2006

Our Yoga Deck And Studios

Outdoor yoga classes take place on our platform which is located in an oasis of green inside the village walls. It's a beautiful and serene environment, with dappled sunlight and the sound of birdsong all around.

The yoga room was lovely and so was the platform outside in the garden. Truly a magic environment for yoga. I didn’t want to leave!
— A. Jordan, Ireland, 2012

When we choose to practise yoga indoors, we use our own professionally-designed and restored 40 square-metre studio which has a wooden floor, a freshwater spring and an ancient cave as a bathroom.

For larger groups, we also have a 50 square-metre professional yoga studio which has panoramic views, coconut carpeting and central heating for the winter months.

Our yoga classes are attended only by our guests; we don't include visitors.

I cannot recommend Sunflower Retreats or Casperia highly enough. …it was a brilliant place to unwind and focus on my wellbeing. Our little group of five strangers became friends and I really hope I can return one day soon.
— Dreid, Glasgow 2016

Our Treatment Rooms in Casperia

Treatments are conducted in a warm, safe, healing environment within the historic village. The rooms are cleansed by “saging” regularly, invoking the four major elements of earth, air, fire and water, to create a warm, safe, healing environment with a special energy - earthy, rustic, and bohemian with a touch of chic.

The treatment area has a very grounding energy amplified by crystals, aromatherapy oils, eagle, buzzard and peacock feathers, books on healing and spiritual knowledge, and jewellery from India and Asia. Other healing objects complement the energy flow of light and healing.

Over the 18 years that we have used our treatment rooms they've acquired a tangible healing energy, deeply connected to Sunflower Retreats’ philosophy of mind, body and soul wellness .

Most of these treatments are available each week throughout the season. Treatment prices range from €30 to €100 per session, depending on your choice of treatment and duration.

The yoga and treatments were so good.

In this way, you can add to your experience or stick to your budget and still have a fantastic holiday.

Thermal baths and wild hot springs

Each week we organise a visit to the open-air pool at Viterbo and the nearby wild springs, where you can bathe in sulphur-rich mud. Combining sulphur-water bathing with yoga practice is extremely healing to the whole body and mind.

The Terme Dei Papi Centre

Viterbo's hot sulphurous spring water has been used since Roman times to draw impurities out of the skin, to stimulate skin cells to secrete natural oils and to reduce blood pressure and rheumatism. The huge pool has sun-loungers, palm trees and a bar and the water has different depths and temperature zones.

The wild springs

We also visit the local wild hot springs, situated in open fields. Here you can bathe in the sulphur-rich organic mud used in rehabilitative treatments, beauty masks and wraps.

Both the thermal baths and the hot springs are quiet, perfect places to relax, unwind and feel the tension, toxins, aches and pains being released from your body.

A very enjoyable week spent in Casperia. Met some seriously inspiring people. I would recommend it to anyone, especially single people!
— Thomas, Athens, 2012

The all-day excursion to the thermal baths and wild hot sulphur springs costs €45 per-person (minimum 3 people) including the entrance fee to spa, visit to the springs, and transport.

Please remember to pack flip-flops and a towel, or towelling dressing gown, for this excursion.

Swim in our countryside pool and in wild streams

Our holidays include free use of a countryside swimming pool surrounded by olive groves and rolling hills. It is exclusive to our guests and is open from late May to the end of our season, subject to the weather.

Guests can walk to the pool, cycle or use our free shuttle service.

You may also use the swimming pool at the tennis club, for which a charge is made.

It is also possible to visit wild streams which run through mountains and valleys, where you can immerse yourself in the nature of the Sabina area.

We highly recommend doing some cycling during your holiday in Sabina. We offer free use of bikes, modern and classic, including racers, explorers, mountain bikes and even a tandem! - It's a great way to see the location; it gives you time to take in the views and discover the countryside, breathe in the fresh air and taste the scents.

There is no hurry on a bicycle; you can just go at your own pace enjoying the views and feeling free to stop, say, at a beautiful field full of poppies, wild flowers and ancient olive trees in the springtime. Take a picnic, or maybe cycle your way to a hilltop village and have a wonderful traditional Italian lunch, eating delicious local organic ingredients such as fresh hand-picked tomatoes, freshly-picked basil, mozzarella and more.

It's a great way of meeting the local people too. Even in high summer when it tends to get hotter, you can cycle to wild streams and waterfalls and reward your effort by diving into in the fresh, cool, clean water of these beautiful natural sites.

We provide detailed maps of the area, as well as advice on interesting natural and historic sites to visit. There is a choice of routes, across quiet and low-traffic, hilly or mountain roads with spectacular scenery.

Highly recommended; the guided walk… a refreshing, tranquil forest trail.
— Maira, 2008

Every Sunday we have free guided walk. The Sabina mountains (1200 meters) surrounding Casperia, rich in flora and fauna, are rarely visited by walkers and offer astonishing trekking and scenery.

If you'd like to organise trips of your own, we can give you recommended walking routes and maps.

Climbing is very popular in the Sabina mountains too, but you'll need to bring your own equipment.

Lucy was drawn to the practice of Hatha yoga and the yoga philosophy while studying holistic therapies professionally in London in 1989. In the late 80's and early 90's, then in her twenties, she travelled independently when at that time it was not common for women to travel alone, her journey took her to Nepal, India, Thailand, Malaysia,Indonesia, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, Sudan and the USA, where she broadened her studies of yoga, Eastern philosophy and the healing arts, including the American Indian tradition and philosophy.

Lucy is a qualified Holistic Therapist and international yoga teacher, accredited by the Friends of Yoga - a society and examination body for yoga in the UK and India which is recognised by Yoga Alliance©, as an international yoga school. Over the last twenty five years she has helped thousands of people with healing therapies and with yoga instruction, either through her yoga classes and treatments, or through all she has coordinated in the yoga and healing section at Sunflower Retreats' centre in Casperia. Lucy specialises in working with women’s issues and health and wellbeing and her interests also include Ayurveda, Soul food cooking, Shamanism, Astrology, art and the study of the sacred and divine feminine.

Lucy's group yoga classes are holistic and grounding, fusing the elements of Ying and Yang, yoga asanas and practices with some flow sequences and traditional asanas in order to bring balance (union) to the body, mind, emotions and spirit. She also teaches Water Yoga or Acqua Yoga where certain yoga asanas are practiced within the element of water; water being a supportive element for physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

Lucy loves to share and communicate the ancient knowledge of Western and Eastern traditions so to infuse our connection back to Mother earth, our body & self , this is done directly through the healing power of yoga and meditation and Yoga nidra, both in her classes and her treatments.

Yoga is letting go… the ability to let go of stuff that’s not important. Yoga refines your senses by giving you techniques to be in the moment. Yoga connects you to the natural world, the Earth ( Gaia ). Yoga helps you to obtain more patience and gratitude
— Lucy

Lisa Quish - Casperia - May 16th to 29th

Lisa Quish, certified through Yoga Alliance, has been a popular member of our teaching team for many years.

Lisa's mom taught yoga and she grew up in a household where it was part of life. In her teens she studied ballet and contemporary dance and when she later qualified as a yoga teacher it felt like all the pieces of the puzzle had come together. Yoga, like dance, is about movement of the body but also works to harness the breath creating a rhythm which allows the body to flow and open to grace. When the body is bright and healthy, the mind is clear and the spirit is full one cannot but engage with the world in a lighter way.

Lisa's style of teaching is Hatha flow with a strong foundation in correct body alignment. Lisa's style of teaching is Hatha flow with a strong foundation in correct body alignment. She continues to refine her own practice and teaching skills and has commenced a level two teacher training programme and regularly attends teaching workshops to expand her knowledge and bring her students the benefit of her learning.

As a busy business professional and yoga teacher Lisa brings a balance of reality, commitment and fun to her classes, ensuring that students get an equal amount of space and attention so they can discover the freedom and discipline that a well balanced and joyful practice brings.

If you can bring a little bit of yoga into everything you do then life just becomes lighter. Like any relationship, if you invest a little you gain a lot.

Ben Rakidzija - Casperia, Italy - May 30th to July 3rd

Ben Rakidzija, born in Germany in 1980, is certified by the American Yoga Alliance (500 RYT). We welcome him to back to Casperia to lead our retreats in June.

Ben’s teaching experience in retreats and studios has taken him as far afield as Costa Rica, Germany, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. His yoga style is open; he practises a mix of Hatha Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Yin Yoga and QiGong; also involving exercises in Facial Training and Contact Improvisation. The aim of his practice is a stable body and a clear mind.

Ben also teaches Zazen, the meditation practice of Zen-Buddhism, the aim of which is merely sitting, free from thoughts, images or judgments. He has practised Zazen for ten years with various teachers, such as Ryushin Paul Haller, from the USA and Shodo Harada Roshi from Japan.

To further expand his education, Ben visits many seminars and workshops; most recently in Facial Training, led by Dr. Schleip (Germany), and an intensive course in Contact Improvisation, by Martin Keogh (USA). Another part of Ben's life is as a graduate Master of Arts in Philosophy and History.

May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and freedom for all.

Jessie Jeanne Stinnett - Italy - August 15th to Sept 3rd

We welcome back Jessie Jeanne Stinnett, from the USA, to Sunflower Retreats to teach in August.

Jessie began practicing yoga as a supplement to her career as a professional dancer. Jessie is a Yoga Alliance Certified instructor through Frog Lotus International. She teaches classes and workshops regularly in London and the US, and is also pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Practice.

Jessie teaches dynamic Vinyasa Flow yoga classes which focus on building strength, stability, and flexibility. She draws on her experience as a dancer/somatic movement practitioner to develop classes which condition and increase awareness of the body and heal, restore, and express one’s inner landscape.

The use of metaphors and imagery are key methods of Jessie’s teaching style which serve the purpose of guiding her students to a deep, subjective understanding of how the techniques and philosophies underpinning the practice apply to them as individuals. She encourages depth of understanding over superficiality: quality versus quantity.

The pace of the class generally includes a quiet time of transition through Tapas (Sanskrit: heat/self discipline), building the internal fire, as the physicality of the practice intensifies to resolution in the final moments of relaxation, observation and reflection. Students are left feeling energized and thoughtful and encased by the energy that their very own body-mind cultivated as a glowing membrane of radiance.

I’m interested in leading others to practice the physical mastery of asana, definitely, but I’m also interested in artistry, allowing light, breath, sensation, and emotion to enter into the practice. Awareness of these elements helps us open larger channels of energy within the body, mind, and soul.
— Jessie

katie spence - italy - july 4th to july 17th

I was bought to yoga from a young age as my mother practised regulary, My love of yoga began as I grew older, practising a lot of dance and surfing. I realised I wanted something more; a deeper connection and understanding of my body and finding yoga gave me that something I was missing.

I did my first yoga training in Goa, India in Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga. I gained a much deeper practise into yoga and I knew this was just the beginning into my learning and teaching. In 2018 I decided to further my yoga teaching training by enrolling in a three month Hatha Yoga training in Byron bay, Australia. This gave me further knowledge into yoga Lineage and made me realise how important in is to connect the body, mind and breath together as one.

As a yoga teacher I strive to bring enthusiasm and passion to my classes.

My aim is to facilitate my students in learning to be happy with themselves and what their bodies can do, feeling healthy, relaxed and energised inside and out.

My class takes inspiration from dance, my passion for surfing, and my love of travel. I hope for every student to leave my class with a smile on their face and feeling inspired to live a healthy life.

I believe in a healthy lifestyle, full of self-love and self-care. This is what I aim to promote within my teachings.

Cesare Dapiaggi - Italy - September 19-25 & OCTOBER 10-16

We welcome Cesare Dipiaggi, from Italy, back to our Casperia team this year.

Cesare started practicing yoga assiduously in 2010, after realizing that he could play a key role in treating disorders of the bodies and the minds of people weary from years of intercontinental travel. His job as a flight attendant made him aware of the negative consequences of nights spent on shift work and of jet lag.

After making several trips to Asia, he started the discipline of Hatha yoga through a method created by Supreme Master Gabriella Cella; the first woman to bring the ancient teachings the Sivananda to Italy. After studying for more than forty years in various ashrams scattered across India, she developed the Yoga Ratna method where 'ratna' means 'the jewel' through which we uncover our true being.

Cesare teaches a path that winds through the study of the elements, the asanas that represent the many deities of the Hindu pantheon, and the 'scruti' - listening to their energy impression. Pranayama helps spread this new information in depth, through breathing, and meditation of loving kindness serves as an aid to clear our mind of all negative thoughts.

Yama and Nyama are intended as rules of respect for ourselves and for others, to be implemented on the mat but especially outside.

That’s what teaches us discipline - learning to listen to ourselves and to those around us.

Om Shanti.
— Cesare

Anna Sadhana Pilotti - September 5-11 & September 26-2 OCTOBER.

anna yoga teacher casperia.jpg

Anna - Swedish-Italian based and a Mum to three lovely daughters - started her spiritual search in the beginning of the 90’s. She went through various personal development programs which led her in contact with Osho and other living Mystics around the world. She travelled through everything from the way of the Mystic, Sufism, Buddism, Advaita Vedanta, Shamanism, Tantra and much more. Curious for the ever-connecting golden thread of consciousness.
After over ten years of practice and spiritual research she changed from normal office hours and business career as a PR consultant to one of Sweden’s biggest firms to full time Yogini and teacher.
She added a diploma as a Mindfulness MBSR teacher and she was part of the creation of one of Stockholm’s biggest yoga schools; Yogayama. She has been teaching retreats in Italy since early 2000.

From 2011 she is also a certified Access Consciousness Bars Facilitator including educating others and giving sessions .

She also works as a Personal Development Coach and gives sessions live and online.

Anna’s yoga classes are very much about learning to listen to the body, learning Energy language and getting through the falseness of tensions and heaviness. She puts much attention to tools of alignment that creates not only a more balanced body but truly gets you into Lightness of your Being and Lightness of moving your body.

Anna likes “ Happy Yoga” and she enjoys taking the seriousness out of the practise. She listen in to the energy of each group and she seeks to empower all to more of themselves; to more possibilities and fewer judgements.

Her yogic experience goes through Kundalini, Hatha, Llyengar, Dona Holleman, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Vinni Yoga and Yin&Yang Yoga.
Today she blends these into her own mix, using the best of all methods for the requirements of the participants attending her yoga classes .

Mantra singing is one of my passions which you may also encounter in my classes. Mantra is incorporated in a light and easy way for all to enjoy and play with.
